COLUMBIA, S.C. — U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., paid tribute to the late Sen. Lindsey Graham during a funeral service in Columbia, according to the Office of U.S. Sen. Tim Scott. Scott joined Graham’s family, friends and colleagues to honor his life and legacy of service.
“I am going to miss my friend Lindsey Graham, the congressmember who becomes a senator, who becomes a world leader, statesman without any question,” Scott said. “I am going to miss my friend Lindsey Graham.”
Scott recalled Graham attending his wedding nearly two years ago and telling a young child at the event, “Case, I’m so sorry, buddy, there will be no Social Security for you.”
Scott also described asking Graham 15 years ago to attend the first South Carolina prayer breakfast in Washington. He said Graham initially resisted an early morning event, saying, “I ain’t coming if Jesus comes before 10 a.m., I am not going to be there,” but arrived at 8:31 a.m. anyway.
Scott shared advice he said Graham gave to children, including telling them not to sell drugs on school property because of “enhanced sentencing guidelines.”
Scott said Graham lived by example rather than words, citing lessons of being comfortable with oneself, standing up for those who cannot stand for themselves, and Graham’s Christian faith.
“Lindsey was always authentically himself,” Scott said. “He always found time to fight for the underdog.”
