The S.C. State Library released its monthly list of electronic state publications, featuring a Department of Natural Resources brochure on the state's bat species.

The South Carolina State Library has published its complete list of December electronic state publications, according to the S.C. State Library.
The publications are available through the South Carolina Digital State Documents Depository, which provides electronic access to state agency reports, statistics, and data, according to the State Library.
Among the December publications is a brochure titled Bats of South Carolina, produced by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). SCDNR is the state agency responsible for protecting and managing South Carolina’s natural and cultural resources, including fish, wildlife, and plants, and employs more than 1,000 people across all 46 counties, according to SCDNR.
The brochure states that South Carolina has 15 bat species. A 2011 study cited in the brochure found that bats act as natural pest suppressors for the state’s agricultural industry, an effect equivalent to about $115 million spent annually on pesticides, according to SCDNR. The brochure also states that bats can reduce the impact of pesticides on other wildlife species in South Carolina.
The brochure notes that white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease affecting bats, has killed more than 6 million bats worldwide since 2006 and has caused significant local extinctions, according to SCDNR.
