State Library Completes Digitization of All Sandlapper Magazine Issues

The S.C. State Library has digitized all 257 issues of Sandlapper: The Magazine of South Carolina along with 18 issues of its successor, Carolina Lifestyle.

The South Carolina State Library has digitized all 257 issues of Sandlapper: The Magazine of South Carolina, according to the State Library.

The library also digitized 18 issues of Carolina Lifestyle, a magazine formed from the merger of Sandlapper and Tar Heel: The Magazine of North Carolina, according to the State Library.

Sandlapper was published between 1968 and 2012. It was founded in 1968 by Lexington lawyer Robert P. Wilkins Sr. and his wife, Rose, with the goal of promoting South Carolina’s attractions, people and history, according to the State Library. The first issue, published in January 1968, featured a portrait of Gov. James F. Byrnes on its cover.

Wilkins stepped away from the magazine in 1973, though publication continued. In 1982, Sandlapper merged with Tar Heel: The Magazine of North Carolina to create Carolina Lifestyle, which covered both states but ceased publication in 1983 after 18 issues, according to the State Library.

Wilkins revived Sandlapper in 1990 as a glossy, bimonthly publication through RPW Publishing Company. In 1994, the Sandlapper Society, Inc. was established to publish the magazine as a nonprofit, advertising-free outlet dedicated to South Carolina’s people, places, history and culture, according to the State Library.

The magazine published its final issue, a combined Winter 2011/Spring 2012 edition, before Wilkins died in 2013, according to the State Library.

Over its run, Sandlapper featured South Carolina photographers and writers covering state history, art, culture, recipes, festivals, sports, nature and notable residents, according to the State Library. Digitized issues of both Sandlapper and Carolina Lifestyle are available for viewing and download through the State Library.
