A man was shot after exchanging gunfire with Lexington County deputies outside a Shadowfield Drive home, according to the S.C. Law Enforcement Division.
WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — The S.C. Law Enforcement Division is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Friday in Lexington County, according to SLED.
Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies were responding to a call for service at a home on Shadowfield Drive when they found a man outside carrying a shotgun, according to SLED. Gunfire was exchanged during the encounter, and the man was shot, SLED said.
The man remains hospitalized for treatment, according to SLED. No officers were hurt.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department asked SLED to lead the investigation, according to SLED. The agency said it is not releasing additional details while the case is active.
SLED said it investigates officer-involved shootings at the request of the agency involved or the agency with jurisdiction, aiming to complete an independent criminal investigation as quickly as circumstances allow. Agents will interview potential witnesses and collect and forensically test relevant evidence, according to SLED. The findings will be compiled into a case file for prosecutors, the agency said.
SLED said this is the 28th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026 and the first this year involving the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department. There were 45 officer-involved shootings statewide in 2025, and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department had none that year, according to SLED.
