U.S. Rep. Russell Fry says he will introduce legislation to temporarily halt the federal tax on gasoline and diesel to ease fuel costs for American families.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Russell Fry, R-S.C., said Sept. 14 that he plans to introduce legislation temporarily suspending the federal gas tax, according to Fry’s office.
The federal government currently collects 18 cents per gallon on gasoline and 24 cents per gallon on diesel fuel, according to Fry’s office. Fry’s proposed bill would pause both taxes to offset rising fuel prices nationwide.
“Whether you’re a parent driving to work, a farmer putting crops in the ground, a rancher feeding livestock, or a small business owner just trying to keep your doors open, you feel the impact of high fuel prices,” Fry said. “Relief should start where Americans feel it the most—at the pump and in our budgets. Temporarily suspending the federal gas tax will give American families much needed breathing room. I am proud to lead efforts in Congress to provide this relief and put money back in the pockets of American families.”
According to Fry’s office, President Donald Trump and Energy Secretary Chris Wright have expressed support for suspending the gas tax and have urged Congress to act.
Fry’s office said the legislation is expected to be formally introduced in the coming days.
