The edible films and coatings manufacturer is expanding its Swansea plant with a new processing line and building addition.
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Devro, a maker of edible films and coatings, is expanding its manufacturing operations in Calhoun County, according to the S.C. Department of Commerce.
The investment is expected to create 19 new jobs.
Devro, which has operated for more than 85 years, produces collagen casings and gels used in the meat industry. The company runs four sales offices and seven manufacturing plants, including its facility at 785 Old Swamp Road in Swansea, according to Commerce.
The Swansea site will add a new processing line and expand its building to support preparation of raw materials, increasing production capacity. Operations tied to the expansion are expected to begin in 2028, Commerce said.
The Coordinating Council for Economic Development approved a $250,000 Set-Aside grant to Calhoun County to help cover site preparation and construction costs.
Devro Procurement, Supply and Logistics Manager Steven Crapps said the expansion reflects the company’s confidence in the region.
“Devro is excited to continue investing in Calhoun County and the state of South Carolina. This expansion reflects our confidence in the region’s talented workforce, strong business environment and long-term growth opportunities. The additional capacity and infrastructure improvements will strengthen our ability to serve customers while creating new career opportunities and supporting the local community for years to come,” Crapps said.
Calhoun County Economic Development Director John E. McLauchlin said Devro has been based in the county since 1977, with previous expansions in 1991 and 2015.
“We are honored and proud that our second-oldest company, Devro, has called Calhoun County home since 1977 with major market expansions in 1991 and 2015. Still today, Devro sees the value in continuing to invest in our community and our workforce by bringing this expansion to Calhoun County. Thank you!” McLauchlin said.
