SCDNR Opens Public Survey to Guide Ashley Scenic River Management Plan

State wildlife officials and a river advisory council are collecting public feedback through Oct. 31 to help update management guidelines for the Ashley Scenic River.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the Ashley Scenic River Advisory Council are seeking public input for a revised management plan covering the Ashley Scenic River, according to SCDNR.

An online survey will gather opinions and information from residents who use the river, helping to identify issues the updated plan should address, SCDNR said.

The Ashley River earned its state scenic river designation in 1998, recognizing historic and cultural values of national and regional importance along with its recreational and wildlife habitat significance to the Charleston area, according to SCDNR. The designation covers a 22-mile stretch of the river running from the Highway 17-A bridge to the Interstate 526 bridge crossing.

The management plan is meant to guide protection and improvement of the river and its resources, SCDNR said. Public input will help the agency and advisory council determine what residents value most about the river, along with challenges, opportunities and priorities for its future, according to the release.

SCDNR said citizen responses will help ensure the plan reflects community interests when it comes to promoting partnerships, supporting policies and encouraging actions to protect and enhance the river.

The survey is open through Oct. 31, 2026, at www.surveymonkey.com/r/AshleyRiver. More information is available at www.dnr.sc.gov/water/river or by contacting SCDNR Program Manager Bill Marshall at (803) 734-9096 or [email protected].
