SCDCA Offers Free Cybersecurity Webinars and Document Shred Events in October

The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs is hosting seven online sessions and three shredding events this month to help residents and businesses guard against information theft.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs is marking Cybersecurity Awareness Month with a series of free webinars and shredding events aimed at helping consumers and businesses protect personal information, according to the agency.

SCDCA plans four webinars for consumers and three for businesses throughout October, covering topics including multi-factor authentication, strong passwords, software updates and phishing scams, the agency said.

The consumer sessions are scheduled for Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28, each at 10:30 a.m., addressing cybersecurity basics, data privacy, passwords and passkeys, and social media safety. Business-focused webinars are set for Oct. 1, 22 and 29 at 2 p.m., covering security breach notices, the FTC Safeguards Rule and state and federal privacy laws.

In addition to the webinars, SCDCA is partnering with Shred360 to hold three free document-shredding events. They are scheduled for Oct. 19 at the USC Aiken Convocation Center in Graniteville, Oct. 22 at North Spartanburg Park in Boiling Springs, and Oct. 29 at the Shred360 facility in Irmo, according to the department.

The shred events will operate as drive-throughs, and attendees are asked to remain in their vehicles. Each vehicle is limited to three boxes no larger than a copy-paper box or three bags no larger than a kitchen trash bag. Residents do not need to remove binder clips, paper clips, staples, rubber bands or CDs and DVDs before shredding, the agency said.

All webinars and shred events are free. SCDCA also offers a downloadable “Cybersecurity Basics” flyer and said it will share additional cybersecurity tips throughout October on its Facebook page.

SCDCA, established in 1974, says it works to protect South Carolina consumers while supporting businesses that operate honestly and fairly.
