A Florence County sheriff’s deputy shot at a man during a traffic stop and pursuit last week, leaving him with non-life-threatening injuries, according to SLED.
FLORENCE, S.C. — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place Sept. 18 in Florence County, according to SLED.
A Florence County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted a traffic stop that turned into a pursuit on West Black Creek Road in Florence, SLED said. Both the deputy’s vehicle and the vehicle driven by a male subject briefly stopped, and the deputy fired during that stop before the pursuit resumed, according to SLED.
The man’s vehicle eventually stopped. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and then released into the custody of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, SLED said. No law enforcement officers were injured, according to SLED.
The Florence County Sheriff’s Office asked SLED to investigate the shooting. SLED said the case remains open and no further details will be released at this time.
SLED said its agents will interview all potential witnesses and collect and forensically test relevant evidence. The agency will compile its findings into a case file for submission to prosecutors, according to SLED.
The shooting is the 29th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026 and the second involving the Florence County Sheriff’s Office this year, according to SLED. The agency reported 45 officer-involved shootings statewide in 2025, including one involving the Florence County Sheriff’s Office.
