A woman died after exchanging gunfire with an Anderson County deputy responding to reports of shots fired, according to SLED.

ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday in Anderson County, according to SLED.
Anderson County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a home on Bradberry Road in Townville for calls about an individual with a gun and shots fired in the area, according to SLED. One deputy encountered a woman, later identified as Linda Ann McAbee, 55, who was armed with a handgun, according to SLED.
During the encounter, there was an exchange of gunfire and McAbee was shot, according to SLED. She was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. No law enforcement officers were injured, according to SLED.
SLED was requested to investigate by the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office. The case is ongoing, and SLED said no further information will be disclosed at this time.
According to SLED, agents will interview all potential witnesses, collect relevant evidence and forensically test it as needed. The findings will be summarized in a case file report submitted to prosecutors, according to SLED.
The incident is the 23rd officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026 and the third for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office this year, according to SLED. In 2025, there were 45 officer-involved shootings statewide, including two involving the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, according to SLED.
