WASHINGTON — President Donald J. Trump awarded the Medal of Honor to retired U.S. Marine Corps Maj. James Capers Jr., recognizing his heroism and leadership during the Vietnam War, according to the office of U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C.

Norman, who represents South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District, first introduced legislation to award Capers the Medal of Honor and has advocated for his recognition for years, according to his office.

Norman’s office released a statement following the presentation, according to the release.
