COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Drew McKissick argued in an op-ed that political parties have a right to freedom of association, according to the South Carolina Republican Party.

McKissick wrote that the most important task of a political party is choosing candidates likely to support its agenda once elected. He said South Carolina does not allow voters to register with a political party affiliation, and it does not allow parties to decide who selects their nominees or who qualifies to run under their banner.

McKissick said that under the current system, Republicans are forced to allow participation from people who oppose the party when it carries out that nomination process, according to the South Carolina Republican Party.
