A woman died after pointing a handgun at officers responding to a call at a Spartanburg County apartment complex, according to SLED.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating a fatal shooting involving a Spartanburg Police Department officer that occurred Sunday at an apartment complex, according to SLED.
Spartanburg officers responded to a call for service at the Georgetown Village Apartments on Kensington Drive, according to SLED. When officers arrived, a woman came out of her apartment onto a breezeway and pointed a handgun at them, SLED said.
One of the officers shot the woman, according to SLED. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. No officers were hurt, SLED said.
The Spartanburg Police Department asked SLED to investigate, as is standard practice for officer-involved shootings, according to SLED. SLED said its agents will interview witnesses, collect evidence and conduct forensic testing as needed. The findings will be compiled into a case file for prosecutors, according to SLED.
SLED said no further details will be released while the investigation is active.
According to SLED, the shooting is the 25th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026 and the first this year involving the Spartanburg Police Department. SLED reported 45 officer-involved shootings statewide in 2025, including one involving the Spartanburg Police Department.
