NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — South Carolina Department of Revenue agents arrested a Berkeley County woman Friday and charged her with operating a business without a retail license, according to the SCDOR.
Melissa Lauren Carr, 35, of Moncks Corner, operated R&W Truck Service Inc. in North Charleston, the SCDOR said.
According to an arrest warrant, the SCDOR revoked Carr’s retail license on Nov. 19, 2025. The agency said every person engaged in business in South Carolina as a retailer must obtain a retail license before making retail sales subject to sales and use tax.
The SCDOR said Carr was advised by revenue officers to close her business and stop making sales after her license was revoked, but an investigation found she did not do so.
If convicted, Carr faces a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail and/or a $200 fine, according to the SCDOR. She is being held at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center in Charleston pending a bond hearing, the agency said.
The SCDOR said anyone who suspects a state tax crime, such as tax evasion or fraud, can contact the agency’s Criminal Investigation division by submitting a Tax Violation Complaint Form to [email protected].
